Who is Richard Mack?

I am running for Wayne State University Board of Governors, and I humbly ask for your support.  I have been nominated by the Michigan Democratic Party.  It is truly a blessing and an honor to receive the Party's support.

I have been a union-side labor and civil rights attorney for the last 28 years.  In my career, I have negotiated dozens of employment contracts.  This requires me to wade through many hundreds of complex accounting documents, trying to find creative solutions to budget pressures.  I pride myself on a pragmatic approach, where we thoroughly assess the needs of all sides involved, and press for common ground solutions.

For example, I was Chief Counsel for a Coalition during the Detroit bankruptcy; a Coalition that included more than 25 of the city of Detroit's civilian-side unions. The Coalition negotiated directly with the health insurance companies, achieving proposed savings of $80 million in healthcare alone.

I want to use my experience to help deliver a top-notch education for students, while fairly compensating the faculty and staff who make that education possible.  I also want to expand the University's reach into the community, both in the city of Detroit and across the state.  I am driven to help make WSU more affordable, safe, and connected to the entire state of Michigan.
